We Are BethelThe name Bethel comes from Genesis 28, where Jacob receives a vision while asleep on his way to the region of Harran. He sees a ladder with its feet on the earth and stretching all the way to heaven. The angels are ascending and descending upon the ladder. He hears the promises of God. Upon waking, Jacob declares, “Surely the LORD is in this place and I was not aware of it.” Then he gets up, takes a stone and sets it up as a pillar and pours oil on it. He named that place Bethel.
Bethel is where we see Jesus. In John 1:51, Jesus says that we will see “angels descending and descending on the son of man,” which was a way of talking about himself. Jesus is the ladder between heaven and earth that Jacob saw. Bethel proclaims that Jesus is the only way to heaven, the only way to the Father. Bethel is where we name the presence and work of God. God was there and Jacob could not see it until his eyes had been opened by the vision. Upon beholding Christ through faith, we are called to see and proclaim where God is at work in our homes, our hearts, our work, our neighbors, our city. “Surely the LORD is in this place” if we have but eyes to see. Bethel is where we point others to Jesus. After seeing and speaking, Jacob takes a stone and stands it on its head as a marker for all to see. Everyone who passed by would see the stone, see that it was not laying naturally, but had clearly been moved. The stone stood as a sign to everyone who saw it so they would ask, “What happened here?” We are people who have seen and heard, have believed and received the good news of what God has done in Jesus Christ. Our lives should be like standing stones. Knowing God in Christ should change our lives, leading us to live in such a way that people see us and wonder, “What happened here?” |
SharingWhen Christ poured out the Spirit on the church at Pentecost, he called the church to mission - to proclaim to every nook and cranny of the world that Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour. As Paul says, we are "ambassadors for Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:20).The good news of Jesus Christ is for those inside the church, but it also propels us out into the world to share that good news with others.
CHristIt's all about Jesus. The good news we share is not about us, our good deeds, our projects and agendas, or even our love for Jesus. Instead, it is about Jesus Christ, his work for us on the cross and in the empty tomb, his kingdom which is coming, and his unfailing love for us. As Pauls says, we proclaim "Jesus Christ, and him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2).
In CommunityWhen Christ saves, he unites us to himself by the Spirit and joins us to his body, the church. We live out our calling to follow Christ in our workplaces, our homes, our neighborhoods, and our schools, but we never do it alone. We are a community joined together by Christ that shares Christ in our community of Brantford.

Who We Are
Worshiping the Saviour
"Praise the LORD!
Praise, O servants of the LORD; Praise the name of the LORD. Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time on and forevermore." (Psalm 113:1-2) Worship of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is central to our life and calling at Bethel. We have been redeemed, we cannot help but praise our Redeemer. We are committed to vibrant, hospitable worship with both holy joy and honest lament.

Welcoming the Stranger
"Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining" (1 Peter 4:8-9)
At Bethel, we know what it is like to be strangers and we know the immense gift of belonging to Jesus Christ. Because we have been welcomed by God in Christ Jesus, we welcome others. We follow Christ by our intentional hospitality to those searching or new in the faith - for all looking to find their home in Christ.

Growing Together
in Christ "But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ" (Ephesians 4:15)
With our roots firmly in the gospel of Jesus Christ and nourished by the Word and at the Lord's Table, we grow up in Christian faith, hope, and love. God made us to grow together. At Bethel, we have intentional and engaging small groups
